Utrecht, 7 April 2021 Mediq has successfully raised new funding in order to finance its continued European expansion as a healthcare and homecare partner. Mediq has secured new longterm financing to replace existing debt facilities that will allow the company to continue to pursue its growth path. Advent International, one of the world’s largest private equity firms, will continue to support Mediq throughout its next phase of growth.

Over the last two years, Mediq has strengthened its European footprint through a string of acquisitions, such as that of Replant 4 Care in Hungary, H&R Healthcare in the United Kingdom, Norway’s Puls AS and last month Medirum AB in Sweden. In the Netherlands, Mediq aims to acquire Eurocept Homecare and Da Vinci Kliniek, which will add around 400 employees to the Benelux-team. The company is steadily transforming from a wholesale business to a healthcare solutions and service provider. “Advent has been a very valuable and supportive strategic partner since they came onboard. We are proud of the vote of confidence by this high quality investor who shares our vision”, says Christian Wojczewski, Mediq’s CEO.

"Mediq is performing well and successfully executing on its growth ambitions. We are pleased to have strengthened our commitment to a company that supports healthcare institutions and professionals to provide the best possible care, and helps patients to self-manage chronic diseases. Staying ahead in the healthcare industry means offering value beyond medical products and addressing issues such as affordability of quality healthcare. Mediq is well positioned to play a leading role in this challenging environment”, commented Tom Allen, Managing Director of Advent International.

At Mediq, we want to help shape a better and healthier world by developing healthcare solutions that can be incorporated into everyday patient lives. We regularly undertake initiatives to achieve our main CSR goals of health system strengthening and patient empowerment & well-being. A great example is the DiaCare program that strengthens outpatient diabetes care. By connecting people, technology and data, the program helps care providers meet the Quadruple Aim: an improved patient experience, better health outcomes, an improved staff experience and lower cost of care.

Diabetes is a chronic, metabolic disease which leads over time to serious damage to the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys and nerves. The most common is type 2 diabetes, which occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn't make enough insulin. Type 1 diabetes is a chronic condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin by itself. About 422 million people worldwide have diabetes. Both the number of cases and the prevalence of diabetes have been steadily increasing over the past few decades. There is a globally agreed target to halt the rise in diabetes and obesity by 2025.

Meeting tomorrow’s healthcare needs
To expand today’s capacity and capabilities to match tomorrow’s needs, health systems need to embrace change. Mediq’s DiaCare program extends care delivery by providing smarter and more efficient care processes with better collaboration between diabetes nurses and patients. The DiaCare app provides patients with insights into their blood sugar levels and helps them prepare for consultations. Patients can also use e-learning modules to supplement their knowledge on subjects such as nutrition, self-regulation, sports and exercise, and carbohydrates. Healthcare professionals can use the DiaCare portal to monitor patients’ values and help patients faster. DiaCare also supports video calling via a secure connection.

Accomplishments and feedback
DiaCare was introduced in the Netherlands in 2017. Since then, 35 healthcare institutions became involved in the program with around 3.200 registered diabetes patients and 260 active users per month. Approximately 75% of the patients report blood glucose value levels within a healthy range. ‘Professionals and patients tell us that they especially appreciate the function of consult preparation. Patients enjoy knowing what to discuss in advance and professionals find it helpful that they can easily view a patient’s health data’, says Matthijs van Hagen, e-business specialist at Mediq.

DiaCare advantages:
•    Improved patient awareness and therapy compliance
•    Smarter and more efficient care process
•    Less risks of developing complications
•    Better health outcomes
•    Lower healthcare costs

Affordability and accessibility of care
This is a logical step in the transformation that Mediq started after the sale of its pharmacy activities. Since then, major changes have been made to strengthen direct-to-patient and institutional activities. Substantial investments were made in digitization, customer service processes and an ultramodern fulfillment center in Bleiswijk. Mediq also introduced multiple innovations that positively influence the care process and life of people with a chronic condition or illness. “In 2020 we are fully committed to growth as this enables us to keep providing affordable and accessible healthcare solutions," Linders says.

Arjen Linders has joined Mediq as Executive Vice President Benelux. Linders previously worked for Philips, amongst others as Senior Vice President & Market Leader Personal Health for North America.
